Star Wars just squandered all the potential of Luke and Ahsoka’s meeting

The most recent episode of The Book of Boba Fett featured a shocking — and somewhat disappointing — revelation about Luke Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano.

Warning: SPOILERS for Boba Fett’s book episode 6.

Boba Fett’s book Episode 6 featured the return of a young Luke Skywalker and also featured Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano, but sadly, the potential of their encounter was completely squandered. Aside from the confusing fact that a show named after Boba Fett features so little Boba Fett, the reveal of the two Force users on the site of Luke’s burgeoning Jedi academy was surprising, emotional and satisfying. But still, the surprise of Luke and Ahsoka sharing the screen in Boba Fett’s book was offset by the disappointing realization that these two characters already knew each other in canon.

Ahsoka’s appearance was a strong moment that created a bridge all the way from the Star Wars prequels to the sequel trilogy. The idea that Anakin Skywalker’s padawan witnessed the creation of Luke’s Jedi Temple before it was finally destroyed by Kylo Ren (something a few Mandalorian theories) was certainly a smart choice. But given Ahsoka’s history with the Skywalker family, this connective tissue may have been better established in a different way.

When Ahsoka first speaks to Din Djarin in Boba Fett’s book episode 6, which acts as a de-facto introduction to The Mandalorian season 3, she calls herself”an old friend of the (Skywalker) familyWhile this line is a nod to fans who know her history as Anakin Skywalker’s padawan from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, it also reminds those in the know how disappointing her sudden appearance in Boba Fett’s book lies beneath the surface. Given Ahsoka’s history with the Skywalker family, her first meeting with Luke would certainly be an incredibly emotional moment that deserves to be shown on screen. While viewers won’t necessarily see Ahsoka’s encounter with every Force user like Cal Kestis, the sheer potential weight of her first encounter with Anakin’s son makes it a glaring omission from Boba Fett’s book. It would probably be a huge cathartic moment for both Ahsoka and Luke, each of whom knew Anakin Skywalker on different side of his journey to and from the Dark Side.

Granted, Ahsoka and Luke’s first meeting wouldn’t make much sense in the context of Boba Fett’s book. The upcoming Disney+ Ahsoka show, however, might present an organic opportunity at this point. Since Ahsoka Tano is one of the last known Force users at the time her show is supposedly taking place, the show would be a clever way to bring together the galaxy’s remaining Jedi. A show dedicated to Ahsoka herself would also be much more focused on her emotional state and journey, meeting Anakin’s son and making appropriate a reckoning with her former master’s actions.

Maybe what makes the idea that Luke and Ahsoka already know each other in Boba Fett’s book is the fact that Ahsoka herself had very little to do in the episode. She essentially served as a buffer that kept Din Djarin from seeing Grogu – a task that could have been accomplished by R2D2, who was only seen briefly in the episode. Other than a few short lines of dialogue, Ahsoka and Luke barely spent any time together. Ideally flashbacks in Ahsoka will tackle what Boba Fett’s book not, showing the actual encounter of two of the main Force wielders in Star Wars.
