Zach Braff & Gabrielle Union Lead Disney Reboot

Walt Disney Studios has released a trailer for the remake of Cheaper By The Dozen, which will be released on March 18, 2022, led by Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union.

Walt Disney Studios launches the official trailer for Cheaper per dozen starring Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union. The film reboots 20th Century Fox’s 2003 photo of the same name. Disney acquired Fox in early 2019 and announced in August of the same year that they planned to reinvent the family classic. The 2003 film was itself a reboot of the 1950 photo, also referred to as Cheaper per dozen, loosely based on the book by Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr. and his brother Ernestine Gilbreth Carey.

The 2003 film starred Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt as the heads of the Baker family and was surrounded by a cast of talented young actors such as Hillary Duff, Alyson Stoner and Liliana Mumy and was directed by Shawn Levy. The story revolves around a family of 12 children and their parents trying to keep order in a chaotic house. As critics watched the film citing a general lack of humor, audiences flocked to theaters, bringing the title #2 in its opening weekend’s highest-grossing films. This excitement from the audience led to a sequel in 2005 that was similarly acclaimed.

Cheaper per dozen premieres on Disney+ on March 18, 2022. The trailer, seen below, features Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union as Paul and Zoey Baker and introduces the audience to their blended family of 10 children. Black-ish producer Gail Lerner will direct the film with the screenplay by Kenya Barris and Jenifer Rice-Genzuk.

Barris and Rice-Genzuk have previously collaborated on both blackish and Grown-ish, both critically acclaimed shows, which show promise for their work on the new Disney+ picture. Braff previously starred in the comedy series scrubs and the recent movie The comeback path. Union is known for her roles in Deliver us from EveThink like a manand Bring it on, to name a few. These two are ready to lead a large ensemble with their experience in ensemble casts and comedic roles. This is one of several properties that Disney promised to reboot after purchasing 20th Century Fox. The trailer shows the two teaming up to take the daunting task of raising kids to hilariously elevated levels. Notably, the original premise of 12 kids for 2 parents has been changed to 10 kids, making the whole family itself the titular dozen rather than just the kids.

Changing the number of children in the family is just one of many changes in the way the Bakers have been portrayed. The trailer shows us an interracial, blended family, a family structure that is not often focused on in the media, while still aligning with the original’s familial comedy of mistakes. It seems clear that the writers and directors have done their best to bring diversity to the world Cheaper per dozen and shows a family that is traditionally not the focus of recognizable comedy. This is exciting news for those who loved the original film and for those who haven’t seen the 2003 photo, as it promises to bring a hearty laugh to children and adults alike.
