Simu Liu shares the first page of his upcoming memoir, telling the story of the day he first learned he landed the lead role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Shang-Chi was the second film in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, set to hit theaters on September 3, 2021. It introduced MCU fans to Shang-Chi, a kung fu expert trained by his father (Tony Leung), the leader of a crime organization called the Ten Rings. His father’s obsession with resurrecting his dead wife’s ghost threatens the mystical land of Ta Lo, so Shang-Chi must reluctantly become a hero and team up with his martial artist sister (Meng’er Zhang) and his best friend ( Awkwafina) to stop him. shang-chi was a huge box office hit for the pandemic era, reaching #2 on the domestic chart for the year.

although Shang-Chi is the project that made Simu Liu a household name, the actor has been working in the industry since the early 2010s. He alternated between minor roles in series like Nikita and Department Store 13 and stunt appearances, including doubling up for Pete Wentz in the Fall Out Boy music video “Centuries.” His first big break was in the popular Canadian sitcom Kim’s conveniencein which he played the estranged son of a couple who own a grocery store in Toronto. Kim’s convenience ran for 5 seasons, the finale aired just five months before the premiere of Shang-Chi.

on his Twitter, Simu Liu shared a draft from the first page of his upcoming memoir, detailing the day he discovered his life would change. The call announcing that he’d been cast as Shang-Chi, coming from Marvel Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige himself, reached him as he was relaxing at home after a morning of shooting for Kim’s convenience. As Liu describes it, he was “lazing in my underwear and eating a bag of shrimp crackers.” Watch the clip below:

This excerpt is from Liu’s upcoming memoir, entitled: We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story. The book is expected to be published by HarperCollins on May 3, 2022, meaning it must be in the late Polish stages. This is certainly the quickest turn of events a Marvel star has had between making their MCU debut and releasing a book about their experience.


In fact, this memoir of the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the first memoir by an artist focusing specifically on involvement in a Marvel film. The publishing industry is sure to see books by the likes of the original Avengers at some point, including stars plucked from relative obscurity to play heroes like Thor‘s Chris Hemsworth. However, Liu is clearly making a start and not taking the opportunity for granted.
