Notorious con artist Anna Delvey on why she won’t invent Anna

Anna Delvey will not be watching the Netflix series based on her life, Inventing Anna, as she feels like an afterthought while she remains in ICE custody.

While anticipation is high for Netflix’s miniseries, invent Annathe person who inspired the entire series, Anna Sorokin (aka Anna Delvey), will not tune in as she remains in ICE custody. invent Anna is an upcoming drama miniseries that investigates the real-life case of Delvey, a notorious con man who stole millions from New York elites. The series will premiere on Netflix on February 11, 2022. Ozark star, Julia Garner, will play Delvey for the series and will be joined by cast members Anna Chlumsky, Anna Deavere Smith, Anders Holm and Katie Lowes.

Directed by Shonda Rimes, invent Anna is based on the article “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People” by Jessica Pressler. It delves into the rise and fall of Sorokin, who posed as a German billionaire heiress named Delvey to steal millions. After posing as a German heiress and swindling money from New York’s elite, Delvey’s lies caught up with her, leading to her arrest and conviction on eight charges of theft and robbery. The notorious con man was sentenced to 4-12 years in prison and was released in February 2021. However, due to overstaying her visa, she was quickly admitted to ICE Custody, where she now resides.

In an essay published by InsiderDelvey opened up why she won’t tune in invent Anna. Delvey explained that while the world is watching Garner’s fictional take on Delvey’s life, she is still in a cell in the Orange County Jail. Despite her excessive visa extension beyond her control, she remains in custody, with no clear path to release. While Delvey was visited by Garner in prison and while she was curious about… invent Annas take on her story, she just”can’t help but feel like an afterthought.” invent Anna could tell her story, but it doesn’t show the continuation of her life in ICE custody. Watch her statement below:

So no – it doesn’t look like I’ll be watching “Inventing Anna” anytime soon. Even if I pulled a few strings and managed to pull it off, nothing about seeing a fictional version of myself in this criminal, insane asylum environment sounds appealing to me. For a long time I hoped that by the time “Inventing Anna” came out, I would have moved on with my life. I imagined the show would be some sort of closure to a long chapter that had come to an end. Nearly four years in the making and hours of phone calls and visits later, the show is based on my story and told from a journalist’s perspective. And while I’m curious to see how they’ve interpreted all the research and material provided, I feel like an afterthought, the bleak irony of being locked up in a cell in yet another horrendous correctional facility lost between the lines, the history repeats itself.

Delvey continues in her essay to paint a rather grim picture of what her ICE custody looks like in the face of COVID-19 isolation. According to Delvey, she is the only woman in ICE custody in the entire Orange County prison. The quarantine isolation means she goes weeks at a time without being let out of her cell, which she calls a “petri dish for viruses and bacteria. The prison is understaffed and she hasn’t seen a real doctor in over four years. Delvey said viewers of invent Anna also won’t get to see her new habit of biting the skin around her nails to try and pass the time in another day of isolation.

Delvey’s explanation of why she won’t watch Netflix invent Anna is very understandable. The show will capture her incredibly true story of a con artist, but it won’t quite capture where she is now. While the show was in development, Delvey thought that by the time it came out, she’d be out of jail and moved on with her life. However, the overstay of her visa and custody of ICE continued to hinder her release, even after she paid her restitution and served her jail term. Delvey doesn’t want to watch of course invent Anna, knowing that her fictional story will catch the attention of society, while in real life she remains seemingly forgotten in ICE custody. While Delvey’s scandal will undoubtedly captivate viewers of invent Annait remains to be seen how much attention her ongoing plight will attract.
