Paramount+ has announced a Knuckles television series that will be released in 2023 and will stem from the upcoming movie Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Paramount announces a new Sonic the hedgehog TV series based on the character Knuckles, who will be voiced by Idris Elba. Sonic the hedgehog was a huge hit for Paramount Pictures when it was released on February 14, 2020, as the film grossed $319.7 million worldwide and was one of the last big hits at the box office before closing theaters due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The sequel, Sonic the hedgehog 2will currently hit theaters on April 8, 2022.

Sonic the hedgehog 2 is set to introduce a fan favorite character, Knuckles the Echidna, to the franchise, with Idris Elba voicing the character. Knuckles was introduced in the video game Sonic the hedgehog 3 in 1994, where he originally appeared as an enemy. However, over the course of the video games, Knuckles has become one of Sonic’s greatest allies. Knuckles has appeared in a number of Sonic projects over the years, including animated television series and other video games, but often as a supporting player. Now seems to be Knuckles’ time to shine.

Paramount+ has officially announced that a Knuckles television series is coming to the streaming service. Idris Elba will reprise his role as Knuckles from Sonic the hedgehog 2 and the series will premiere on Paramount+ sometime in 2023. No further details about the series have been given, but it is likely that the upcoming film will set up the final television series. See the announcement below:

The Knuckles television series is a very similar step to Warner Bros. greenlighting a peacekeeper series before The Suicide Squad hit theaters, and the series was released the year after the movie. peacekeeper has become a big hit for Warner Bros. and DC, so a similar release strategy might work for Sonic the hedgehog and Knuckles, in what will be the first live-action TV series for the Sonic franchisee. The character is already popular for the games and the presence of Idris Elba makes Knuckles a bigger potential breakthrough.

Dropping Knuckles on his own TV show is a good sign for the Sonic the hedgehog Brand. While Paramount has lost distribution rights to many major franchises, such as the MCU and Indiana Jones, on several acquisitions over the past decade, they have begun to invest heavily in the franchises they do have and it seems Sonic the hedgehog and the mythology of the games is a big priority for the studio, as they just announced Sonic the hedgehog 3† Paramount seems to be creating a cross-media franchise that includes movies and television series and the like: Star TrekSonic the hedgehog is a brand that will have a large presence in movies and on the streaming service Paramount+.
