Kristen Stewart’s role of Princess Diana rejected by British Film Awards

After missing out on a SAG nomination, Kristen Stewart’s awards hopes for the Princess Diana biopic Spencer have taken another hit with a BAFTA bat.

Despite being considered a key player in this year’s awards ceremony, Kristen Stewart’s performance as Princess Diana in Spencer has been rejected by the BAFTAs. Since ending her time as Bella Swan in the Twilight movies, Stewart has garnered some interesting credit for her filmography, mainly through independent films. Of Spencer, the actress has received the best reviews of her career and quickly became one of the strongest contenders for best actress at the film’s premiere. Directed by Pablo Larrain, Spencer follows the tragic public figure as she struggles to survive a particularly controversial holiday weekend with the royal family.

Stewart was a prominent fixture in the early stages of this current award season, receiving several awards and nominations from various critics. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe, although she lost it to The Ricardos are Nicole Kidman. Nevertheless, Stewart’s Spencer performance seemed destined for other awards, which is why many were surprised when she missed out on a Screen Actors’ Guild nomination. Since that awards show is specific to acting, her lack of a nomination was a serious rejection, especially to those who support her.

Now Stewart has unfortunately missed another important prize. On Thursday morning, the BAFTAs announced their nominations for the 2022 awards, and Stewart was not on the lead list, making it one of the group’s biggest snubs (via Deadline). Instead, the nominees are Lady Gaga (House of Gucci), Alana Haim (Licorice Pizza), Emilia Jones (CODA), Renate Reinsve (The worst person in the world), Joanna Scanlan (after love), and Tessa Thompson (pass).

Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in Spencer

All in all, the BAFTA nominations are surprising to many. Stewart wasn’t the only contender for a lead actress, like Kidman and Olivia Colman, a favorite for The Prodigal Daughter, were also left out in the cold. For Spencer in general it was completely shut out; even the critically acclaimed costumes were not honored with a nomination. To some, this seems like a bad sign for Spencerchance at the Oscars.

And yet it’s important to remember that the BAFTAs are not the same as the Oscars. Stewart and Spencer‘s lack of nominations at the BAFTAs is especially shocking because of the subject matter, but both have received a lot of love within Hollywood. Stewart had a lot of momentum early on and that could still push her to her first Oscar nomination. For her part, Stewart has said she doesn’t care about the buzz of prices, so hopefully this doesn’t affect her too much. Regardless of what the awards bodies say, she put on a brilliant performance as Diana, and it has already been recognized by many people. We’ll just have to wait and see what the Oscars say next Tuesday.
