In New Jersey, Mac and Katy Schafer gave birth to Hunter Schafer in 1998. Her father is a Presbyterian minister who has moved their family between churches and congregations in New Jersey, Arizona, and North Carolina.

In 2017, Hunter was chosen to play Jules in Euphoria. The show is based on the Israeli series of the same name and follows a group of high school students as they navigate love, drugs, and sex. Euphoria has been praised for its controversial but honest portrayal of teenage life, including issues such as drug addiction and mental health problems.

“There’s a lot of me in Jules,” Schafer told Harpers Bazaar. “Making blurred lines between an actor and a character makes for a deeper character,” she added.

“I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this in the press before, but there’s a phenomenon among the trans and queer community that I think leads to us making fantastic artists all of the time,” Schafer said to Harpers Bazaar.

Schafer is a transgender woman. She said that the Internet helped her manage her gender identity, turning to YouTube and social media to learn about other people’s transition progressions.  She transitioned in high school after being diagnosed with dysphoria in ninth grade. “I’m proud to be a trans person,” she added.

Hunter was widely recognized following her appearance in the series, and the Primetime Emmy Awards came under fire for failing to nominate her alongside other transgender actors. She co-wrote an episode with show creator Sam Levinson and served as a co-executive producer, as well as collaborating with him to ensure that her character and the show’s narrative mirrored hers.

In 2020, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first LGBTQ Pride parade, Schafer was recognized by Queerty among the 50 heroes “leading the nation toward equality, acceptance, and respect for all people.” For 2021, Time selected her to its Next list of “100 emerging leaders who are shaping the future,” with a tribute written by Zendaya costar Euphoria.

Hunter Schafer is one of the most promising young actors in Hollywood today. With her powerful performance in Euphoria and her dedication to transgender advocacy, she will inspire and educate audiences for years to come.
