Dr. Hanover, then known by his real name, Dr. Manuel Banyaga, attempted to give Henry a therapeutic dose of LSD to curb his violent tendencies but instead, Henry pours the rest of the drug into Dr. Banyaga’s glass, so they both trip out.

The subplot in Angel of Mercy, revealing that Dr. Hanover participated in LSD treatments that led to multiple amputations of his patient, is straight out of Asylum and grisly in ways only Murphy projects can be.

Both were real, but fortunately the barbaric procedure is no longer used in treating psychological problems, with the last recorded lobotomy in the US taking place back in 1967.

The two share a tender moment, though they don’t explicitly say how they know each other. It’s eventually revealed, however, that Edmund is the adoptive brother of Nurse Ratched.

We find out that Mildred’s desire to work at Lucia State is fueled by her brother, Edmund Tolleson (Finn Wittrock); he’s being treated (read: tortured) in the hospital because he is a serial killer, hunting down priests at local parishes and killing them in fits of rage.

Richard confessed to abusing several different drugs in his past to Mildred in a state of panic. We ca see this when he is inhaling a sort of gas and sniffing a liquid medication inside his car.

Ratched then takes Hanover’s head to Osgood, taking the payment for the bounty on the man who destroyed Henry Osgood. Moments later, a man named Diego stabs Lenore Osgood in the back with a pitchfork, apparently at the behest of Henry.

It is also known that Ken based the character of Ratched on a real head nurse he worked alongside at the hospital and described her as a cold, heartless tyrant in the book. Therefore, while Ratched is fictional, she’s based on a real person and elements of the book and show are based on real experiences.

Filipino In Ratched, Dr. Hanover’s Filipino race comes into play quietly, bringing a sense of authenticity to the character and to Briones.
